The Stormont Mill, which stood on this site, was the first of several cotton mills making use of the water power of the Cornwall Canal for industrial purposes.
Founded by the Gault brothers in 1870, the original Stormont Cotton Mill burned to the ground in 1874. Five years later, the Gaults erected a new mill, and by 1881m the six-storey structure, depicted here, housed 500 looms.
In 1903, the Stormont Mill merged ownership with the east end cotton mills, under the name Canadian Cottons Ltd. In 1959, all three factories closed.
